NURSIECARE

The Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) has announced a new streamlined registration pathway for internationally qualified registered nurses (IQRNs) from select countries. This initiative, set to commence in April 2025, is designed to accelerate the integration of skilled nurses into Australia’s healthcare system, addressing the growing demand for qualified professionals. Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency – Streamlined pathway to registration for internationally qualified registered nurses

Key Highlights of the New Registration Pathway

  • Eligible Countries: Registered nurses from the United Kingdom, Ireland, the United States, Singapore, Spain, and Canada (British Columbia & Ontario) are eligible for this process.

  • Practice Experience Requirement: Applicants must have completed at least 1,800 hours of practice (roughly one year of full-time work) within the past eight years.

  • Faster Registration Process: The new system reduces the registration timeline from 9–12 months to just 1–6 months, allowing nurses to start working in Australia more quickly.

Addressing Workforce Shortages in Australian Healthcare

According to the Australian Department of Health and Aged Care, Australia faces a projected shortfall of over 70,000 full-time nurses by 2035. The AHPRA announcement highlights how this initiative will help alleviate workforce shortages by streamlining the process for experienced international nurses to obtain Australian registration.

By making it easier for skilled nurses to transition into the Australian workforce, this initiative ensures continuity of care for patients, supports overworked healthcare teams, and strengthens aged care and hospital systems nationwide.
