The Cost Of A Vacancy
And Why It Takes So Long
Finding the right GP nurse often takes longer than employers expect, particularly in regional and rural Australia where workforce shortages remain significant.
Nursiecare helps reduce this burden by proactively building relationships with AHPRA-registered nurses ready to transition into general practice. Supported by workforce planning data, regional and rural recruitment remains one of the greatest challenges facing Australian primary care.
A passive job ad usually isn’t enough, because:
- You’re competing broadly. GP clinics compete with hospitals, aged care, community services and telehealth providers for the same nurses.
- Registration isn’t the same as fit. AHPRA registration alone doesn’t indicate communication skills, primary-care readiness, motivation, or whether someone will stay.
- The wait has a cost. While the role sits open, clinical and admin tasks shift back to GPs, preventive care (recalls, care plans, immunisation follow-up) slips, and repeat short-term cover adds pressure and inconsistency to your team.
Starting a focused search early gives you more options, and a permanent nurse who fits the clinic creates far more value than a rotation of locum or casual cover.

How We Assess
Candidates
Nursiecare is a nurse-led permanent recruitment agency, founded by Anna Bennett, who brings hands-on nursing experience across acute and aged care settings. We look beyond the CV to build a full picture of each candidate.
- AHPRA registration — status, conditions and recency of practice
- Clinical capability — experience and skills relevant to treatment-room, chronic disease and preventive-care work
- Motivation — a clear, tested reason for choosing general practice and choosing your clinic
- Practical and regional fit — work rights, availability, hours, location and (for regional roles) relocation readiness.

Our Process
Here are the following steps:
Step 1: Match the Right Nurse
We take the time to understand your recruitment requirements, including the role, clinical needs, location, remuneration, onboarding expectations, and visa sponsorship options (where applicable). From our pre-screened pool of experienced overseas-trained nurses, we shortlist candidates with outpatient department or general practice experience, as well as nurses with transferable clinical backgrounds who demonstrate a genuine commitment to transitioning into primary care.
Step 2: Assess and Shortlist
We assess shortlisted candidates by verifying their AHPRA registration, reviewing their clinical background, communication skills, professional references, career goals and alignment with your recruitment requirements before introducing them to your practice.
Step 3: Interview and Appoint
You select the pre-screened, shortlisted candidates who best suits your practice. We support the process by coordinating interviews, facilitating communication, completing reference checks where required and assisting with the offer and placement process.

What This Means
For Your Clinic
The right hire reduces pressure across the whole team. Clinics that fill nursing roles with the right permanent fit typically see improvements in care-plan follow-up, immunisation delivery, treatment-room flow and patient education, as well as greater consistency for the rest of the team.

Recent Placement
A regional NSW GP clinic was seeking an AHPRA-registered nurse to join its team. After discussing the clinic’s requirements, we presented a targeted shortlist of suitable candidates. The employer completed the interview process efficiently and appointed a nurse without interviewing many applicants.

Can you assist regional clinics?
Yes. We support GP clinics across metropolitan, regional and rural Australia. We understand that recruiting nurses outside major cities can pose additional challenges, particularly when relocation or visa sponsorship is required.
What does your recruitment service cost?
Our recruitment fee is calculated as a percentage of the successful candidate’s total annual remuneration package. We believe in transparent and competitive pricing and are happy to discuss a fee structure that reflects your recruitment needs.
We understand that managing recruitment costs is part of running a practice. To support your cash flow, we partner with APay to offer eligible employers the option to pay their recruitment fee in instalments, subject to approval.
Contact us for a confidential discussion or to request a tailored fee proposal.
Is there a guarantee period if the placement doesn't work out?
Yes. We provide a 3-month replacement guarantee for permanent placements, subject to our terms and conditions. If the placement is unsuccessful within the guarantee period for reasons covered by our agreement, we will work with you to identify and introduce a suitable replacement candidate.
